Aim & Objectives

Delegates will learn, practice and adopt a range of proven techniques to improve their interpersonal communication skills.

Course Objectives
By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • List common barriers to workplace communication and how to avoid them
  • Demonstrate a variety of techniques for improving influence and assertiveness
  • Explain the value of active listening and effective questioning in the communication process
  • Use the BOCA model to provide effective feedback to colleagues

Defining Effective Communication

Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw said, “The most dangerous thing about communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”

  • What do we mean by communication?
  • What happens when it goes wrong?
  • Whose responsibility is it?
  • How good a communicator are you?

The Communication Styles Model

People are not difficult; they are just different! We explore 4 key communication styles and how to use them to improve our workplace communication.

  • What’s your style?
  • Introducing the four styles Entertain, Control, Analyse, Mediate
  • Adapting your style to communicate better with others

Questioning and Listening

  • Exploring the differences between open, closed, leading and probing questions
  • Barriers to effective listening
  • The business benefits of active listening

    I attended the project management qualification in December (having already attended the PRINCE2 course in November). Although a challenging subject, I found that the training was engaging because there was adequate time to not only listen but to also give examples and hear examples from other individuals from the class. This aids to help people’s understanding or misunderstanding in some cases and help breakdown the subject into easier chunks. It also helps that IPSO FACTO have in my opinion some of the most experienced instructors in the country, meaning that if you just don’t get something they bring their personal experience into the story to help your understanding.     I just wanted to write and say how much I enjoyed the PRINCE2 course last week. The whole Ipso-Facto experience was brilliant, from your prompt help in providing information to determine whether the course was going to be right for me and arranging for Tim to call me, through registration and the quality of the preparation materials sent out, to starting the course with Julia Gosse. Julia is a fantastic trainer who not only clearly has bags of experience in project and business management but is also a very highly skilled trainer. Whilst there was a huge amount to learn, she made it easy to absorb and tolerated enormous amounts of questions with patience and kindness.

    The venue was easy to get to and we definitely appreciated the surroundings including the lovely cafe for lunch and the lake. I will definitely recommend Ipso-Facto as a local training provider and will come to you first if you are running courses I am interested in for the future.

    The Excel Level 2 course was brilliant. Having not had much experience of using Excel, I wasn’t sure how much I’d learn but Tim the course tutor was great and went at a good pace, making sure I understood as we went along.
