Use AI confidently in project work. In one day, learn to apply AI safely, check outputs and protect information, then earn the APM Certificate in AI Awareness for Project Professionals after taking the exam.
You may already use Microsoft Copilot or ChatGPT for minutes, emails and reports. But are you sure what you can safely paste in, and whether the output is right? Our one-day APM Certificate in AI Awareness for Project Professionals course gives you a clear, practical way to use AI in everyday project work while keeping your professional judgement. You leave with templates you can use on Monday morning, and you sit the APM exam to gain a recognised certificate.
APM Certificate in AI Awareness for Project Professionals APM Certificate in AI Awareness for Project Professionals, awarded by the Association for Project Management (APM)
AI is now part of everyday project work. In an APM survey of 1,000 UK project professionals, 70% said their organisation already uses AI, almost double the 36% reported in 2023. Yet 49% of those using it named technical knowledge and training as a challenge, and 41% were concerned about inaccurate outputs.
Many people are using AI informally, without guidance, and could be caught out by a confident but wrong answer or a data protection mistake. This certificate closes that gap. It shows your employer, your clients and your next interviewer that you use AI safely, responsibly and well.
This AI Awareness for Project Professionals course is for anyone who works on projects and wants to use AI safely and well. You do not need a technical background or any project management qualification. It is ideal if you are a:
If you already lead teams and need to set rules for how they use AI, look at our APM Certificate in Working with AI in Project Teams course.
The course follows the APM syllabus in five modules. Each one is taught through a realistic project case study, so you practise on safe, fictional data rather than your organisation’s information.
What AI is and is not, how it differs from ordinary automation, and why the same question can give different answers. You learn how prompts, context and the information you provide shape what AI produces.
Which project tasks AI can help with, and when a template, a formula or a person is the better choice. You practise a simple prompt structure on real project tasks such as status reports, RAID logs, minutes and stakeholder emails.
What you can and cannot share with an AI tool, which organisational controls apply, and the legal, commercial and security risks to watch for. You learn when to record, escalate or ask a specialist.
How to spot made-up facts, unsupported claims, bias and missing context, and how to check outputs against your real project information before anyone relies on them.
How AI changes project roles and teamwork, why a faster output is not always a better outcome, and how to keep building your own skills as AI develops.
You do not just learn about AI. You leave with practical tools you can use straight away:
This is a one-day, tutor-led course built around hands-on practice, not slides and theory. You work through a realistic project case study using AI tools, then apply each topic to your own role in your delegate workbook.
You receive learner notes, a delegate workbook and practice exam questions in the APM style.
The exam is taken online on APM’s Surpass platform, the same platform used for the APM PFQ and PMQ.
You get an immediate indication of your result. APM confirms it by email within two weeks and, if you pass, sends your PDF certificate and Credly digital badge. If you need extra time or other support, tell us when you book and we will apply for reasonable adjustments on your behalf.
If your organisation has rolled out Copilot or another AI tool, or has just published an AI policy, this course helps your project staff use it safely and consistently. We tailor the case study and exercises to your sector, tools and policy, so delegates practise exactly what they will do at work. Each delegate leaves with a personal AI use plan, giving you a measurable starting point. [Enquire about in-house training]
Once you’ve passed, the natural next step is the APM Certificate in Working with AI in Project Teams. It’s a practitioner-level certificate for those who lead AI use across a team, covering governance, output assurance and adoption. You may also want to build your core project management skills with the APM PFQ or APM PMQ.
It is an introductory certificate from the Association for Project Management (APM), launched in November 2026. It shows you can use AI safely, responsibly and usefully in project work while keeping human judgement and accountability. You gain it by passing a short online exam.
No. There are no prerequisites and you do not need any technical knowledge. The course is designed for anyone working in a project environment, including coordinators, support staff and people who manage projects alongside another role.
The course takes one day, covering the 6 to 8 guided learning hours APM recommends. The exam lasts 30 minutes and has 20 multiple-choice questions. You need 15 correct answers (75%) to pass.

AI Awareness is the introductory certificate: it covers how to use AI safely in your own project work. Working with AI in Project Teams is the practitioner certificate for people who lead AI use across a team, covering governance, assurance and adoption. Many people take AI Awareness first.
The course is not tied to one product. You practise with widely used AI assistants such as Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT, using a fictional case study so no real data is at risk. For in-house courses we use your organisation’s approved tools.
