Lead AI use across your project team with governance you can defend. In one day, learn to choose strong use cases, protect information, assure outputs and prove benefits. Leave with a team AI governance charter and adoption plan, then earn the APM Certificate in Working with AI in Project Teams.
Your team is already using AI. Reports arrive part-written by Copilot, suppliers use AI in their deliverables, and your sponsor wants efficiencies. Our one-day APM Certificate in Working with AI in Project Teams course gives experienced project professionals the frameworks to decide where AI should contribute, control the information it uses, assure what it produces and keep people accountable. You leave with a team AI governance charter and an adoption plan, and you sit the APM practitioner exam. [Enquire about in-house training]
New to using AI at work? Start with our one-day APM Certificate in AI Awareness for Project Professionals course, then progress to this one.
The APM Certificate in Working with AI in Project Teams, awarded by the Association for Project
Management (APM)
Most project teams now use AI, but few have it under control. In APM’s 2025 survey of 1,000 UK project professionals, 70% said their organisation already uses AI. Yet in APM’s 2026 research, only 27% said AI is fully embedded in their project workflows.
The barriers are leadership problems, not technical ones. Among teams using AI, 44% cite security and data privacy, 42% struggle to integrate it into workflows and 41% worry about inaccurate outputs. APM’s research also places ethical decision-making, professional judgement and data literacy among the most important future skills for project managers.
This certificate gives you the practical tools to close that gap: governance proportionate to the risk, information that is fit for AI, outputs you can stand behind, and adoption that improves outcomes rather than just saving time.
APM has designed two AI certificates that work as a pathway, and we run both as one-day courses. The APM Certificate in AI Awareness for Project Professionals teaches you to use AI safely in your own work. The APM Certificate in Working with AI in Project Teams teaches you to lead, govern and improve how a whole team uses it.
For organisations, a common pattern is AI Awareness for the wider project team and Working with AI in Project Teams for project managers and PMO leads, so everyone shares a common language and the leaders own the controls.
This practitioner course is for experienced project professionals who are responsible for how AI is used in their team, not just their own work. It is ideal if you are a:
It suits sectors where governance matters most: construction, engineering, energy and utilities, transport, defence, financial services and central and local government. It also counts towards CPD if you are working towards Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) status.
The Working with AI in Project Teams course follows the APM syllabus in six modules. You work through a realistic case study, a depot electrification project with multiple suppliers, and apply each module to a real AI use case from your own project.
Treat AI as a contributor you assign work to, not an accountable team member. Assess whether AI suits a project need, select strong use cases, allocate tasks between people, AI and existing systems, and set the right level of supervision.
Judge whether project information is accurate, complete and current enough for AI. Check where it came from and whether you may use it, prepare it properly, and recognise information that must never go into an AI system.
Apply AI across the project life cycle, from business cases and planning to RAID management, forecasting, reporting and handover. Write effective briefs, refine and challenge outputs, and know where professional judgement and approval authority must take precedence.
Evaluate AI outputs for relevance and reliability, spot hallucinations, bias and automation bias, validate against real project evidence, communicate uncertainty honestly, and make justified decisions to accept, amend, reject or refer.
Apply proportionate governance, define decision rights and records, identify security, legal, supplier and ethical risks including shadow AI, and agree when AI use should pause or stop.
Plan adoption that includes everyone in the team, measure whether AI is improving outcomes and decisions rather than just saving time, and improve your controls from evidence.
Everything you produce on the course is built around one real AI use case from your own project, so you leave ready to act:
Our aim: one measurable AI use case live, with its governance charter signed off, within 30 days of the course.
A focused, tutor-led day built on peer discussion, real scenarios and frameworks you can take straight into a steering group. There is little time spent on basics: the day assumes you already know how projects are governed and delivered.
You receive detailed learner notes, a delegate workbook with templates for every module, a starter prompt library and practice questions in the APM exam style.
You sit the exam online on APM’s Surpass platform, which also hosts the APM PFQ and PMQ exams.
You see an indication of your result straight away. APM confirms it by email within two weeks and sends your PDF certificate and Credly digital badge if you pass. Reasonable adjustments are available: tell us when you book and we will arrange them with APM.
If your organisation has rolled out AI tools faster than its controls, this course gives your project leaders a shared, APM-backed approach to governance and assurance. Combine it with AI Awareness for the wider team and you get consistent ways of working at every level. Delegates leave with a governance charter and benefits measures for a real use case, so you can see results within weeks. [Enquire about in-house training]
It is a practitioner-level certificate from the Association for Project Management (APM), launched in November 2026. It shows you can evaluate AI opportunities, govern AI use, assure AI outputs and lead adoption in project teams while keeping people accountable.
No. The APM Certificate in AI Awareness for Project Professionals is not a formal prerequisite. If you are new to using AI at work, we recommend taking it first. If you already use AI and lead a team, you can start here.
AI Awareness is the introductory certificate about using AI safely in your own work. Working with AI in Project Teams is the practitioner certificate about leading, governing and improving AI use across a team. Both are one-day courses with a 20-question exam.
There are no formal entry requirements, but APM recommends project management experience or knowledge at the level of the APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ). The course assumes you understand how projects are governed.
The course takes one day, covering APM’s 6 to 8 guided learning hours. The exam lasts 45 minutes and has 20 multiple-choice questions, some based on short scenarios. You need 15 correct answers (75%) to pass.
No. The certificate focuses on governing and assuring AI use, whatever tools your organisation uses. For in-house courses we build the exercises around your approved tools, such as Microsoft Copilot.
Yes. Many organisations train their wider project team on AI Awareness and their project managers and PMO leads on Working with AI in Project Teams. We can run both in-house, online or at your offices.
Yes. You can record the course as continuing professional development (CPD), including as evidence of development if you are working towards Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) status.
